چکیده

In this paper, we describe our attempts to fit historical data from the Kruger National Park with a plausible one predator and two mutualistic prey model. Explicit examples of how a model is being developed, improved and tested are rare in literature. This is probably because of the many uncertainties, shortcomings in data, assumptions, speculations and intuitive decisions that form part of the process, which provokes a deep and well-founded fear of the resultingmodel being criticized. We investigate the effects of including or excluding various

Determining the relative importance of dilution and detection for zebra foraging in mixed-species herds

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2014.08.012 0003-3472/© 2014 The Association for the Study of A For many animals, a key benefit of group living is lowered predation risk. With increasing group size, individuals commonly reduce vigilance. This group size effect can arise from both dilution of risk and increased collective detection. To determine which was more important, we compared vigilanc...

Shifting prey selection generates contrasting herbivore dynamics within a large-mammal predator-prey web.

Shifting prey selection has been identified as a mechanism potentially regulating predator-prey interactions, but it may also lead to different outcomes, especially in more complex systems with multiple prey species available. We assessed changing prey selection by lions, the major predator for 12 large herbivore species in South Africa's Kruger National Park. The database was provided by recor...

Prey preferences of the lion (Panthera leo)

Lions Panthera leo are generally thought to prey on medium to large ungulates. Knowledge of which species are actually preferred and which are avoided is lacking, however, as is an understanding of why such preference or avoidance may arise. An analysis of 32 studies over 48 different spatial locations or temporal periods throughout the distribution of the lion shows that it preferentially prey...

Migratory herds of wildebeests and zebras indirectly affect calf survival of giraffes

In long-distance migratory systems, local fluctuations in the predator-prey ratio can exhibit extreme variability within a single year depending upon the seasonal location of migratory species. Such systems offer an opportunity to empirically investigate cyclic population density effects on short-term food web interactions by taking advantage of the large seasonal shifts in migratory prey bioma...

Group Dynamics of Zebra and Wildebeest in a Woodland Savanna: Effects of Predation Risk and Habitat Density

BACKGROUND Group dynamics of gregarious ungulates in the grasslands of the African savanna have been well studied, but the trade-offs that affect grouping of these ungulates in woodland habitats or dense vegetation are less well understood. We examined the landscape-level distribution of groups of blue wildebeest, Connochaetes taurinus, and Burchell's zebra, Equus burchelli, in a predominantly ...
